The First Unsupported, Unassisted American Expedition to the North Pole

In the spring of 2005, John Huston joined a Norwegian Team of polar explorers re-running the 1911 race for the South Pole between Roald Amundsen of Norway and Robert Falcon Scott of Britain. This observational-documentary film project pitted an 8-man team of Brits against a 5-man Norwegian team in an actual race (no role playing or acting), in which the teams used the comparable equipment, clothing and food used by the original 1911 expeditions. No plastic, no rip-stop nylon, no Gore-Tex, only cotton, wool, reindeer fur and seal skin. Held in Greenland because sled dogs are banned in Antarctica and filmed by a British production company, this 6 1-hour episode documentary aired in England in August 2006 and on the History Channel in the U.S. in December of 2006. DVDs of the BBC version are sold here.
